This project represents a quintessential discourse on "contemporary intervention within a historical context." The urban fabric of Zhanjiang is characterized by a complex stratification of colonial heritage, subtropical landscape, and a profound vernacular market culture. Rather than a rudimentary restoration of the existing fabric, the design manifests as a dialogue concerning "mnemonic continuity." By situating the intervention within this historical trajectory, the project seeks to bridge the temporal gap between the city’s colonial past and its contemporary social vitality.

Historical Translation: Architecture as a Vessel of Collective Memory

The preserved structural vestiges are integrated into the new tectonic framework, functioning as "historical anchors" within the spatial narrative. This mode of intervention allows the new massing to dissolve into and coexist with the historical context, eschewing a binary opposition in favor of a nuanced contextual symbiosis.

Landscape Response: Infiltration of the Park’s Verdancy

The open platforms facilitate the infiltration of the park's greenery into the market's interior, blurring the demarcation between "commercial activity" and "public recreation." Guided by precise isovist analysis, several visual corridors are "carved" through the building mass. This ensures a persistent perception of the park's seasonal shifts from within, effectively weaving nature into the tapestry of the mundane daily hustle.

The Liberation of the Roof: From "Enclosure" to "Three-Dimensional Park"

Transcending its utilitarian role as a mere weather enclosure, the roof is redefined as the city’s "second ground plane." The terraced rooftop theater and observation decks are accessible to the public, providing an all-weather communal space that addresses the local yearning for outdoor activity in Zhanjiang's climate. By functioning as a shading canopy by day and a cinematic community hub by night, the roof facilitates a temporal shift of "multi-identities," reconfiguring its program across the diurnal cycle.
